SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Police fatally shot a South Bend man while he was stabbing his 6-year-old daughter. She also died from her wounds.
Police arrived at the family's apartment about 5 a.m. Sunday. They forced themselves inside after hearing a girl screaming and found the man on top of his daughter, stabbing her repeatedly. The man died at the scene, WNDU-TV and WSBT-TV reported.
The 6-year-old girl later died at a hospital.
The father and daughter were later identified as Edward Mwaura and Shirley Mundia.
Neighbors tell WSBT the family is originally from Kenya and moved to South Bend area two years ago.
Assistant Commander Lt. Dave Wells of the Metro Homicide Unit in South Bend tell WNDU the girl's mother also suffered several lacerations and stab wounds, but is expected to survive.
A South Bend charter school leader is describing Mundia as sweet, quiet and hard-working.
Veritas Academy education director Germaine Smith says in a statement that Shirley Mundia had finished kindergarten last Thursday.
Smith says Shirley was always smiling, liked everyone and loved learning.
Smith says the academy's thoughts and prayers go out to the Mundia family.
Department of Child Services spokeswoman Stephanie McFarland says the agency did have contact with the family, but it was "some time ago." She says she couldn't provide further details because of privacy laws.
