Chief Donald Grady: If I only had a few more medals... They would have never fired me!
In an effort to move beyond the troubles of this academic year, Northern Illinois University officials announced Tuesday that they are conducting a national search for a new police chief.
The university hopes the search will take about three months, and that a new chief will start during the fall semester. Acting police Chief Darren Mitchell, who took over after Chief Donald Grady was put on leave and ultimately fired, will be a candidate for the job.
"We are taking the search very seriously," said Bill Nicklas, NIU's vice president for public safety and community relations. "The person has to be a leader, a teacher, an expert in campus law enforcement and a diplomat."
It's been a difficult year for the NIU Police Department. University officials fired Grady in February for his department's alleged misconduct in a high-profile rape case. His dismissal letter stated that he likely "ordered, encouraged and/or condoned" the withholding of evidence that could have cleared an NIU officer accused of rape.
