EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Authorities in Stearns and Carver counties have joined the search for clues to the disappearance of a former University of Minnesota Duluth athlete missing since last Wednesday.
Mandy Matula, 24, was last seen leaving her home late Wednesday with her former boyfriend, David Roe. Roe shot himself in the head outside the Eden Prairie police station on Thursday after police asked to speak with him regarding the case. He was pronounced dead Friday.
Eden Prairie police reported Sunday that they believe Roe, 24, probably traveled in parts of Stearns County after he was last seen with Matula, so officials there joined in the search. Matula’s brother, Steven, had earlier said that cell-phone information placed Roe in the St. Cloud area early Thursday.
Police also reported that unspecified items of interest led to a search in Carver County on Sunday, but that search did not result in any significant developments in the case.
Other searchers found pieces of tissue paper in Eden Prairie on Sunday with what appeared to be blood on them. Police later confirmed they were not related to Matula’s disappearance.
Matula is a former UMD softball pitcher and outfielder who played for the Bulldogs from 2008-11.
