In Cook County bond court, prosecutors outlined a story of a troubled relationship that resulted Wednesday in the woman being shot 10 times but surviving.
According to prosecutors, Vance Smith, of the 14600 block of South Ashland Avenue, met his wife while he was in a previous relationship with her mother.
Prosecutors said Smith drove the woman to Indiana when she was 18 years old and "forced her to marry him," but the relationship was marked with abuse. Smith and his wife moved to Texas for some time and recently moved back to Harvey.
After his wife left their shared home and told Smith she "no longer wished to be with him," prosecutors said Smith picked up two handguns and some cash from a storage locker and began driving around looking for her.
He monitored his wife's cell phone and credit card activity, prosecutors said, and called his wife and threatened the life of a mutual friend if she did not return home.
The woman returned to their Harvey home Wednesday, prosecutors said, where Smith shot his wife in the thigh and told her to crawl into another room -- then shooting her again multiple times.
Smith told the woman she would die and left the home, prosecutors said. Soon after that Smith turned himself in to the Peotone police, gave his home address to officers and admitted to having committed a crime in Harvey.
The woman was taken to the hospital, and following surgery, is in stable condition, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said police recovered a .45 caliber gun and a grenade belonging to Smith, who has no criminal background.
Bail for Smith was set at $2 million on attempted murder charges, and his next court date was set for May 14 in Markham.
