Lots of little girls want a horse. But 9-year-old Kira Mammoser is no ordinary girl. About four years ago, doctors diagnosed Kira with an extremely rare disease that attacks the body's life-supporting functions.
So when members of the Chicago Police Department recently learned the police sergeant's daughter had asked for a horse, they gave her the next best thing: a surprise visit from two police horses.
Connected to a ventilator and flanked by family and hospital staff on Wednesday, Kira emerged from Advocate Children's Hospital Park Ridge to meet Mahoney and Marvin, horses from the department's mounted unit, in a grassy area outside.
