An on-duty Chicago police officer was shot in the leg Monday night in the Englewood neighborhood, authorities said.
The officer is expected to survive, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.
The shooting happened about 9 p.m. in the 1200 block of West 72nd Place, when Englewood District officers responded to a call of a burglary in progress, according to a statement from police News Affairs.
The officers proceeded to the second floor landing of the building where they were confronted by a vicious dog, according to the statement.
When the dog charged the officers an officer discharged his weapon, hitting the dog and one of the officers in the leg, the statement said.
Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez said one person was taken from the scene to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and their condition had stabilized.
Investigators from the Chicago Independent Police Review Authority are on the scene, spokesman Larry Merritt said.“We’re responding to an officer-involved shooting at that location,” Merritt said. “An officer was struck – an officer's weapon was discharged,’’ Merritt said.
Merritt had no further details immediately but said the authority is investigating.
